tornadoshe takes her nails
to the fence post
dragging bird droppings
into hungry soil
and closes her eyes
breathing in the eternal
scent of burning homes
a fern jumps up
and licks her leg
tasting the salt
on her ankle
like the dead sea
or a floating baby
arms embraced in
inflated plastic
rough against
slick canvas skin
wet and stretching
across hungry muscles
fighting to swim
she rolls her shoulders
backwards, and takes
steps like a crane
across a somber driveway
leading to an open field
like the open mailbox
at its foot she takes in
strong claws and
slams down.
